Volunteer for the
Rape Recovery Center

The Rape Recovery Center needs volunteers to answer the crisis line, serve on the Hospital Response Team and provide education to the community. Volunteers provide 50% of our services. Crisis intervention trainings are conducted quarterly. This training provides a total of 40 hours of instruction and clinical experience with a focus on crisis intervention techniques and sexual assault survivor advocacy. Instructors for the training include community professionals, staff members, and experienced volunteers.

The 24-hour crisis line provides survivors of rape and sexual assault with immediate emotional support and advocacy, access to information, and referrals. The line can be conveniently forwarded to your home telephone or cell phone.

In order for volunteers to be effective, it is essential that the following requirements be met:
* Complete and return the volunteer application, (fill out the volunteer application)
* Attend and complete the entire 40 hour training program,
* Commit to 20 hours of volunteer service per month (or the hours required by your instructor or department for internship or service learning project), and
* Participate in routine evaluations.

The Rape Recovery Center participates in the cooperative program through the University of Utah and also in the internship program at Westminster College. If you would like to receive credit as a crisis intervention intern for a class service learning project or department internship, please contact your instructor and department of career services for approval prior to attending training.

The cost of training is $50 which includes all materials and the cost of an individual background check. If you attend the training on behalf of another agency and cannot commit to volunteering on a long-term basis, the cost for professional development is $100.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Hospital Response Team or the Speaker's Bureau, an additional 8-hour block of training is required.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, fill out the volunteer application (pdf) for our upcoming crisis intervention training. If you have questions, please call (801) 467-7282 or email Cathy Barnhart, theVolunteer Coodinator.
